Voluntary Benefits
The County of Alameda (County) provides an array of voluntary benefits in various areas as described below.
Accident, Critical Illness, and Hospital Indemnity:
The following voluntary benefits for Accident, Critical Illness, and Hospital Indemnity are provided by the County through MetLife Insurance.

- Critical Illness Insurance pays cash benefit if you or a covered dependent is diagnosed with a critical illness. MetLife Critical Illness Insurance (PDF, 214kb. For more detailed information please review the Critical Illness Insurance Plan Summary.
- Hospital Indemnity Insurance pays cash benefit if you or a covered dependent is hospitalized. MetLife Hospital Indemnity Insurance (PDF, 339kb). For more detailed information please review the Hospital Idemnity Insurance Plan Summary.
Enrollment only available during Open Enrollment.
Group Legal Coverage:
- MetLife Legal Plan: Legal help is valuable at every stage of life. MetLife has created a plan to provide legal help for your entire family. The MetLife Plan covers you, your spouse and dependents for a wide range of legal matters with no deductibles, no co-pays, no claim forms or usage limits when using a Network Attorney for a covered matter.
- MetLife Plus Parents: This option covers your parents and parents-in-law for estate planning, identity theft issues, document review and more. Once enrolled in this benefit you must keep the benefit for the plan year in which it is effective (i.e. Jan 1st – Dec 31st). You can only terminate this coverage during Open Enrollment.
MetLife Identity and Fraud Protection:
This plan helps safeguard your identity, money, assets, family, reputation and privacy. It also requests the removal of your personal information from data broker lists to help reduce spam, robocalls, and more. Receive alerts to inquiries to your credit, suspicious transactions on your bank accounts and changes to your home or car titles.

Pet Insurance:
Pets play such a huge role in our lives. We want to do everything to keep our pets safe and healthy. Help make sure your pets are protected against unplanned vet expenses for covered accidents or illnesses. Please note that Pet Insurance can be added anytime during the year.
The following voluntary benefits for Pet Insurance are provided by the County.

Nationwide Pet Insurance: If your pet gets sick the plan pays! This voluntary option offers plans for Cats, Dogs, and other pets for Veterinary services.
